Technical information

Here you will find more information about what your connection entails: the network connection point, the connection cable, the basic configuration and the cabling in your building.

Network connection point

The network connection point is the element connecting your location with the Telenet network with a connection cable.

There are connection points with two, four and eight outputs. These are located:

Connection cable

The connection cable linking your location with the network connection point must meet certain requirements. The type of connection cable you need depends on the distance between the network connection point and your basic configuration.

Calculate the total cable length

  • If the network connection point is in the building
    Measure the distance between the network connection point and the basic configuration. Add 3 extra metres to this length.
  • If the network connection point is in an enclosure on the pavement
    Measure the distance between the nearest enclosure and the basic configuration. Add 3 extra metres to this length.
  • If the network connection point is on the wall
    Measure the distance between the nearest network connection point on the wall and the basic configuration. Add 3 extra metres to this length.
  • If the network connection point is on a utility pole
    Measure the distance between the foot of the nearest utility pole and the basic configuration. Add 11 extra metres.

Have you written down the total length of your connection cable?

In that case, use the table of cable types to determine which cable you need. Use a conduit with a 40 mm diameter to lay the section of cable on your premises.

Caution! If the cables are more than 80 m long, a special connection is required. Please contact us if that is the case.

Would you like network connection points in your building?

This is possible in buildings with 9 or more individual connections. In that case, we will handle the installation of the connection cable. You or the building’s owner will be responsible for laying a conduit between the cable on the road and the first connection point in your building. This conduit must have a 125 mm diameter and be installed 60 cm deep. Make sure to contact us first.

Basic configuration

A Telenet installer will put in place the basic configuration in your building. The basic configuration is linked to the network connection point with the connection cable. The indoor cabling starts from the basic configuration.

The minimum basic configuration consists of:

  • A network distributor for the distribution of the signals
  • A modem allowing data traffic in both directions

The basic configuration is fitted on to a wooden panel of at least 50 by 50 cm and 1.8 cm thick. This panel is installed by you. You can make the panel bigger for future expansion of the basic configuration with switches or other equipment. Also provide at least 4 earthed 230 V power points. Fit the panel at eye level in a dry technical area.

Cabling in your building

The indoor cabling must be installed by you or a contractor of your choice. It always starts from the basic configuration. Preferably choose built-in cabling with all cables and sockets in the wall. Do not start your indoor cabling until you are certain of the location of your basic configuration.

You are responsible for purchasing the materials for the indoor installation. Always use the correct approved materials.

Considerations

  • Bear in mind that the length of the PVC6 coaxial cable for indoor installation is limited to 20 m after the network distributor.
  • The maximum length of the UTP cable is 100 m after the modem.
  • Remember that you need a UTP category 5E cable as well as a PVC6 coaxial cable for digital television.
  • You need one TV/FM socket for each television set.
  • Besides the TV/FM socket, you also need an RJ-45 socket and one UTP connection per digital television set.

Digital television

Telenet has specific solutions for the distribution of digital television in large buildings such as hospitals and hotels. Please ask your Account Manager for more information.
